Abstract

There has not yet been a comprehensive method that goes behind 'human error' and beyond the failure concept, and various complicated accidents have accentuated the need for it. The Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) fulfils that need. This book presents a detailed and tested method that can be used to model how complex and dynamic socio-technical systems work, and understand both why things sometimes go wrong but also why they normally succeed.

Abstract

In this book, Andreas Dahlin has written a comprehensive and thorough review of plasmonic biosensors that operate by refractometric detection. After an introductory chapter on biosensors, in which he sets out the concepts of biosensing in its application to such areas as proteomics, medical diagnostics and environmental control, he undertakes an integrated coverage of surface chemistry, surface physics and optics, specifically related to the requirements of design of a plasmonic biosensor. Sections on nanoparticle plasmons and surface plasmons follow, leading to a review of SPR technology for

Abstract

Plasmons as Sensors covers the fundamental developments of plasmonic nanosenor design over the last few years. In his acclaimed thesis, Jan Becker addresses the relevant theoretical concepts and then applies these to discuss the properties and trends in nanoparticles of various shapes and sizes. The first discovery Jan makes in his PhD research is that there is an optimal shape for plasmonic nanoparticles used for sensing purposes. In further chapters he goes on to describe novel experimental methods to use plasmonic nanoparticles for molecular sensing. The approach he develops in parallel sensing is one which revolutionizes the field and allows investigation of a variety of topics from nanoparticle growth to membrane protein attachment. Many of the experiments described in this thesis have led to highly visible publications in international journals.

Abstract

“Discontinuous Dynamical Systems” presents a theory of dynamics and flow switchability in discontinuous dynamical systems, which can be as the mathematical foundation for a new dynamics of dynamical system networks. The book includes a theory for flow barriers and passability to boundaries in discontinuous dynamical systems that will completely change traditional concepts and ideas in the field of dynamical systems. Edge dynamics and switching complexity of flows in discontinuous dynamical systems are explored in the book and provide the mathematical basis for developing the attractive network channels in dynamical systems. The theory of bouncing flows to boundaries, edges and vertexes in discontinuous dynamical systems with multi-valued vector fields is described in the book as a “billiard” theory of dynamical system networks. The theory of dynamical system interactions in discontinued dynamical systems can be used as a general principle in dynamical system networks, which is applied to dynamical system synchronization. The book represents a valuable reference work for university professors and researchers in applied mathematics, physics, mechanics, and control.   Dr. Albert C.J. Luo is an internationally respected professor in nonlinear dynamics and mechanics, and he works at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, USA.

Abstract

This book deals with all aspects of plasmonics, basics, applications and advanced developments. Plasmonics is an emerging field of research dedicated to the resonant interaction of light with metals. The light/matter interaction is strongly enhanced at a nanometer scale which sparks a keen interest of a wide scientific community and offers promising applications in pharmacology, solar energy, nanocircuitry or also light sources. The major breakthroughs of this field of research originate from the recent advances in nanotechnology, imaging and numerical modelling.  The book is divided into three main parts: extended surface plasmons polaritons propagating on metallic surfaces, surface plasmons localized on metallic particles, imaging and nanofabrication techniques. The reader will find in the book: Principles and recent advances of plasmonics, a complete description of the physics of surface plasmons, a historical survey with emphasize on the emblematic topic of Wood's anomaly, an overview of modern applications of molecular plasmonics and an extensive description of imaging and fabrications techniques.
